Random

This completely unrelated to what we have been talking about but I did not know where else to write about this and figured since I had a blog, I might as well use it. I was watching TV last night and a commercial came on about registering to vote. With the election coming up, this wasn't surprising. However, the commercial separated voters by their racial classes. Pictures and images came across the screen that would say, "7 million African-Americans are not registered. 3 million Asian-Americans are not registered..." (these numbers aren't the accurate ones because I could not remember the real ones, but you get the idea). After the commercial ended, I was a little taken back by it. I was not necessarily offended by it, but I did not understand why they would divide people up in that manner. I could see if they divided it by age groups or something (ex. "18 million college students are not registered), but the racial division surprised me a little. Am I being over sensitive to the issue, or does someone else see this ad as a bit strange?

This is interesting. I wonder if it was just a general commercial or if it was sponsored by one of the the candidates. If it was sponsored by one of the candidates then which one and why?

How I would GUESS why the commercial was made this way really depends whose behind it. I just feel that maybe if Obama is behind it he might be trying to relate to other African-Americans, especially if that is one of the numbers of non-registered Americans that is high. But it could have a totally different reason!! Another reason that we need to realize that we can't just believe what is on the surface and that to truly understand something we must look deeper!

I saw this same commercial and I had the same thoughts as you! It was really weird that they went through African Americans, Asian Americans and Hispanic Americans separately and then at the end said, so many others haven't in general. Why would they separate the minorities out and then give the final number anyways? I guess it could be an idea on how to get kids to register and inspire them but I feel like if they would have done it differently they may have inspired more. They should not be separating races around election time but rather trying to form a bond across our country so we can elect the right candidate.
